Sure enough, they were ripping out traffic lights and welding manhole covers last night: I got myself up at seven in the morning and headed down to the Foggy Bottom subway station. Getting on wasn't too bad- the car was crowded, but nothing citizens of Tokyo don't go through on a regular basis. Getting out of the subway proved a bit harder- it took more than a half hour. By the time...
It was perhaps ironic that the HuffPo ball, a party celebrating new media, was held at the Newseum, a museum that stands as a paean to old media. Although maybe it was appropriate, given that the last vestiges of old media may be soon relegated to museums. Many celebrities were on hand, such as Dustin Hoffman, Val Kilmer, Ashton Kutcher, Glenn Close, Edward Norton, and Russell Simmons:...
Whenever you tell anyone from D.C. that you're going there, they almost always say the same thing: "You gotta go to Ben's Chili Bowl." Not the Lincoln memorial, not The National Archives, but Ben's Chili Bow. So I got Phil to drive me over there. Oh Phil. Ben's looked like the epicenter of a riot, cordoned off with yellow police tape, surrounded by a thick mass of people and at...
Freezing cold, Hollywood celebrities, fancy parties... D.C. is exactly like Sundance! Yesterday morning, we saw Larry King trying to decide what bagel to pick at the breakfast buffet, and Jamie Foxx singing as he walked through the hotel lobby. Jessica Alba, Maroon 5, and Hayden Panettiere (the Heroes cheerleader that I'm assuming was saved) were all on hand for the "Declare Yourself" party...
Out on Dupont circle, people are throwing shoes at a giant inflatable George W. Bush. It's not all hope, optimism, and dawn of a new american century out here in D.C. There are some people who prefer to look back at the past and accentuate the negative. Quick, less that 24 hours to impeach Bush! Cute protester couple: Her sign refers to...
We're about 36 hours away from inauguration, and I thought I'd take a moment for a few random observations. • The people at the Ritz-Carlton are amazing. There's basically an entire platoon in the lobby waiting to help you. I went and asked for a bottle of water, and four people sprinted at me in order to be of assistance. Strangely though, there's a giant chia-Donkey in lobby, like...
If you're in D.C. right now, do yourself a favor and check out the Hope gallery at 3333 M Street NW. It's really weird that in D.C. all streets have NW or NE at the end of them. Here artist Shephard Fairey touches up one of his pieces: Fairey's iconic portrait of Obama just got inducted into the Smithsonian! This is Yosi Sergant, mastermind of this amazing gallery, which...
It felt like a cross between the Academy Awards, Woodstock, and an Obama campaign stop. Crowd estimates for the giant outdoor concert ranged from four to eight hundred thousand. The mass of people stretched from the stage, at the steps of the Lincoln memorial, past the frozen reflecting pool, through the fascist looking World War Two memorial, up the hill, and just past the Washington...
People in D.C. love to jog. It was a bone-chilling 15 degrees this morning, and still, joggers were everywhere, each one wearing an outfit more ridiculous than the last, ranging from the space-age to just plain geeky. We were doing interviews near the Lincoln memorial, and I stopped one of them to talk. Five minutes into our conversation, he turned out to be a congressman! His name is Earl...
We just checked in to the Ritz-Carlton in beautiful Washington D.C. and I'm literally vibrating with excitement. We drove past the Potomac river, which is frozen, and the Watergate. Of special note are the pillowcases. They are apparently official Presidential Inauguration pillowcases. We plan on stealing them.
